The Original Giant Grinder was founded in 1970 by Brad Fuller in Manhattan Beach, California. Having grown up in Connecticut, he missed being able to find a good East Coast style sandwich in Southern California and opened his own shop after going back to train in Hartford, Connecticut for six months. Brad and his wife Sherri relocated to SLO County in 2008 and opened the Broad Street Giant Grinder. It was the 10th shop that Brad had a hand in opening and kept his traditions going of using fresh and local ingredients to make a truly outstanding sandwich. Only the finest deli meats and cheeses, the freshest vegetables and herbs, always 100% extra virgin olive oil, and of course, the perfect roll, were to be used when constructing one of these grinders.
At the end of 2019 Brad kept his promise to Sherri to retire at 75-years-young and sold the shop to Marty Budinger & Libby Waterbury. This husband and wife team are keeping Broad Street Giant Grinder “family owned and operated” with the same core sandwich menu that Brad curated over the years. They are excited to maintain the quality and local flavors with fresh energy to keep the shop running strong for years to come. Marty can also be found teaching yoga around town when not behind the counter taking sandwich orders at Broad Street Giant Grinder. Libby was born and raised in SLO and understands how serious we take our sandwich shops around town. Come on in and try one yourself – they really are GIANT grinders!
